I like your thesis and think that you are correct about Western approaches, there should be quite a bit of scholastic and scientific evidence that backs up your theory.  If you haven't already read it, I think that you might find some inspiration on the basis of Daoism from the Tao Te Ching. This is my favorite translation of the Tao Te Ching:
